Interpretation-based processing: a unified theory of semantic sentence comprehension

چکیده

We present interpretation-based processing—a theory of sentence processing that builds a syntactic and a semantic representation for a sentence and assigns an interpretation to the sentence as soon as possible. That interpretation can further participate in comprehension and in lexical processing and is vital for relating the sentence to the prior discourse. Our theory offers a unified account of the processing of literal sentences, metaphoric sentences, and sentences containing semantic illusions. It also explains how text can prime lexical access. We show that word literality is a matter of degree and that the speed and quality of comprehension depend both on how similar words are to their antecedents in the preceding text and how salient the sentence is with respect to the preceding text. Interpretation-based processing also reconciles superficially contradictory findings about the difference in processing times for metaphors and literals. The theory has been implemented in ACT-R [Anderson and Lebiere, The Atomic Components of Thought, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Publishers, Mahwah, NJ, 1998]. © 2003 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Task-Induced Involvement in L2 Vocabulary Learning: A Case for Listening Comprehension

The study aimed at investigating whether the retention of vocabulary acquired incidentally is dependent upon the amount of task-induced involvement. Immediate and delayed retention of twenty unfamiliar words was examined in three learning tasks( listening comprehension + group discussion, listening comprehension + dictionary checking + summary writing in L1, and listening comprehension + dictio...

Getting real about semantic illusions: rethinking the functional role of the P600 in language comprehension.

In traditional theories of language comprehension, syntactic and semantic processing are inextricably linked. This assumption has been challenged by the 'semantic illusion effect' found in studies using event related brain potentials. Semantically anomalous sentences did not produce the expected increase in N400 amplitude but rather one in P600 amplitude. To explain these findings, complex mode...

ACT-R as a Unified Architecture of Cognition: A Symposium in Honor of

This talk presents a theory and ACT-R-based model of human sentence comprehension that embodies the following claim: Sentence comprehension consists of a series of cuebased retrievals from short-term (and long-term) memory, subject to similarity-based interference and activation decay. ACT-R does not merely serve as an implementation language for the theory; rather it serves as the vehicle for ...

Is incremental semantic interpretation related to end-of-sentence verification?: Evidence from correlation analyses

Prior research has typically viewed verification as a “late” process that is distinct from comprehension, occurring only after sentence comprehension is complete (e.g., Tanenhaus et al., 1976). If so, we would expect to see no clear relationship between incremental semantic interpretation processes and endof-sentence verification times. Alternatively, these two processes may be systematically r...
